What Is a Tintype?

Patented in the 1850s, the tintype was the original "instant photo" of the 19th century. Unlike modern film, which produces a negative, a tintype is a one-of-a-kind direct positive image made on metal.

Each image is hand-crafted using the wet plate collodion process:

  1. Poured: A thin plate of blackened aluminum is coated by hand with liquid collodion.

  2. Sensitized: The plate is submerged in a silver nitrate bath to make it sensitive to light.

  3. Exposed & Developed: The plate is loaded into the camera, exposed while still wet, developed, and fixed right on the spot.

  4. Lasts a Lifetime: After the plate dries, it is varnished which creates a hard, protective layer over the image.

What To Expect:

  • During your chosen 20 min. timeslot, Em will walk you through the tintype process. We use high powered studio lights and a flash to capture your image - because we use this method, capturing your photo is fairly quick and only takes about 5-10 seconds of holding perfectly still. While the image capture may be quick, most of our time is prepping the metal plate with chemicals and making sure you are in sharp focus.

  • Please make sure to fill out the contact form and arrive 5-10 minutes before your timeslot.

  • Once your photo is taken, we will quickly develop your image and you will have the ability to watch the image form.

  • Tintypes will be available for pickup at Collective Vintage. If you are unable to return to Collective Vintage to pick up your tintype, Em will contact you to arrange shipping.

*Due to our timeframe and size of space, we ask to please include a maximum of two people during the session. Great for individual portraits, couples, & friends!
